"PS5 not working" is really a handful of separate problems, and the fast way through is to name yours and jump to its fix. Two moves clear a lot of cases first, though — a proper power cycle and, when that fails, Safe Mode.

Start here

  1. Full power cycle. Hold the console's power button until you hear the second beep (a full shutdown, not Rest Mode), then unplug for at least 30 seconds and restart. This clears a frozen system and a stuck HDMI handshake.
  2. Safe Mode if it won't boot normally. With the PS5 off, hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode. From there you can fix the display output, rebuild the database, or update — without wiping anything.

Then match your symptom

Won't turn on (no light, or blinks then dies) Try a different wall outlet and check the cable; a brief blue/white flash that dies points at power or overheating. See our guide on a PS5 that won't power on.

Black screen / "No Signal" on the TV This is the most common one — an HDMI handshake or cable/port problem. In Safe Mode you can drop the resolution to get a picture. Full steps in PS5 HDMI not working / no signal.

Picture but no sound Usually the audio Output Device is pointed at a headset or a format the TV can't take. See PS5 not making sound.

Keeps shutting down or runs loud and hot That's thermal — dust and airflow. See PS5 shutting down / overheating.

Online play or downloads fail A network problem, not a console fault. Start with PS5 not connecting to the internet.

If it's crashing or apps misbehave

Before anything drastic, run Rebuild Database from Safe Mode — it re-indexes your installed content without deleting games or saves, and it fixes a lot of crashing, freezing, and "corrupted data" errors. A factory reset is the genuine last resort.

FAQ

What's the first thing to try? A full power cycle — hold for the second beep, unplug 30+ seconds, restart. It clears frozen states and handshake failures.

How do I get into Safe Mode? With the PS5 off, hold the power button until the second beep. From there you can fix the display, rebuild the database, or update.

Will Safe Mode or Rebuild Database delete my games? No. Rebuild Database only re-indexes installed content. Only a factory reset wipes data.

Black screen but the console's on — what is it? An HDMI handshake or cable/port issue. Use Safe Mode to lower the resolution, then work the cable and port.
