A DualSense that won't charge or won't connect is rarely a dead controller. The two most common culprits are the cable (a charge-only or worn USB-C cable) and a stuck pairing state that the tiny reset button clears. Start there before assuming the worst.
If it won't sync / connect
- Pair it with a cable first. Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB-C cable and press the PS button. A wired connection forces a fresh pairing — and if it works wired but not wireless, the controller's fine and the Bluetooth link is the problem.
- Reset the controller. There's a tiny recessed button on the back, near the Sony logo by the right grip. With the PS5 on, poke it with a paperclip and hold ~5 seconds. This clears a stuck Bluetooth pairing — the #1 fix for "won't connect." The same reset button is also the first step for DualSense stick drift.
- Clear the Bluetooth list if it's full. The PS5 only pairs a limited number of controllers. If you've paired several, remove old ones (Settings > Accessories > Bluetooth Accessories) so the controller can re-register.
- Restart the PS5. A full power cycle (hold for the second beep, unplug 30+ seconds) clears a hung controller stack. If the console itself won't respond, work through PS5 not working first.
If it won't charge
- Swap the cable — this is the big one. Many USB-C cables are charge-only or low quality, and some are just worn. Use a known-good data-capable USB-C cable. The supplied PS5 cable, or any quality one, is what you want.
- Charge from the right port. Charge from the PS5's front USB-C port (with the console on or in Rest Mode — fully off, it doesn't supply power unless Rest Mode charging is enabled in Settings > System > Power Saving). A wall USB charger also works.
- Check the light. While charging, the controller's light bar pulses amber, then turns off when full. No light at all on a known-good cable points at the controller's USB-C port — try gently cleaning lint out of the port.
- Let a fully-drained controller sit. A battery run completely flat can take a few minutes on the charger before it shows any light — give it 10–15 minutes before declaring it dead.
FAQ
Where's the DualSense reset button? A small hole on the back near the Sony logo. Poke it with a paperclip and hold ~5 seconds with the PS5 on to reset the controller.
It charges but won't connect wirelessly. Reset the controller (back button), and clear old devices from the PS5's Bluetooth list if it's full. Pairing wired first confirms the controller works.
It won't charge at all — bad controller? Usually the cable. Try a known-good data-capable USB-C cable and charge from the console's front port with the PS5 on or in Rest Mode.
Does it charge when the PS5 is off? Only if Rest Mode charging is enabled (Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode). Fully off, the ports are dead.
