A loud buzz and a disc that won't read are usually two separate problems, and the first job is to tell which you've got. Is the noise constant (it buzzes even with no disc in)? That's the fan or coil whine. Does it only buzz when a disc is inserted, with the drive grinding or repeatedly spinning up? That's the disc drive. Each has a different fix.

If it buzzes with no disc in (fan / coil)

  1. Clear the dust. The PS5's fan gets loud when the vents clog. Power it off and unplug, then blow out the side vents and the rear exhaust with a can of compressed air (short bursts, don't spin the fan). Dust is the number-one cause of a loud PS5 — and the same blocked airflow that makes it loud is what leads to a PS5 that shuts down from overheating.
  2. Give it air. Move it out of an enclosed cabinet — the PS5 needs clearance around all the vents. A hot, boxed-in console ramps the fan to full.
  3. Coil whine is different. A high-pitched electronic whine (not airflow) during heavy load is coil whine — common, usually harmless, and not fixable by cleaning. It's the components, not a fault.

If it buzzes only with a disc (the drive)

  1. Clean the disc. Wipe it with a soft cloth from the center straight outward, never in circles. A smudged or lightly scratched disc makes the drive hunt and grind.
  2. Check orientation (vertical stand). Standing up, the disc goes in with the label facing left — wrong orientation makes the drive struggle to grab it.
  3. Power-cycle the console. Hold for the second beep, unplug 30+ seconds, restart. This resets a confused drive.
  4. Try a different disc. If one disc grinds but others read fine, it's that disc. If every disc struggles, the drive's laser/lens or mechanism is the issue — a lens cleaner can revive a tired pickup; a hardware fault needs Sony.
  5. Listen for the repeated spin-up. A drive that spins up, stops, and retries over and over is failing to track the disc — clean the disc and the lens first; if it persists across discs, it's a drive repair.

When it's a hardware fault

A buzz that's clearly mechanical grinding (not fan, not whine), a disc that won't go in or eject, or a drive that reads nothing across multiple good discs points at the disc-drive assembly. That's a Sony repair — but rule out dust, disc cleanliness, and orientation first, because those fix the majority. If the console also won't start at all rather than just grinding, that's a different problem covered in PS5 not powering on.

FAQ

It buzzes even without a disc — what is it? The fan (dust) or coil whine. Blow out the vents; if it's a high-pitched electronic whine under load, that's harmless coil whine.

One disc grinds but others are fine. That disc is dirty or scratched. Clean it center-outward; if it still struggles, it's the disc.

Every disc fails to read. The drive's lens or mechanism. Try a lens cleaner; if nothing reads across good discs, it's a drive repair.

Is coil whine a problem? No — it's a common, harmless electronic noise under load. Cleaning won't change it, and it doesn't mean failure.
