A Sonos Roam that won't turn on is, nine times out of ten, just deeply discharged or stuck in a sleep state — not a dead speaker. Because the Roam is a battery device that powers down hard when flat (and can get stuck if the battery drained completely weeks ago), the fix is a specific charge-then-force-restart sequence rather than just tapping the power button. Here's what to try, in order.
Fix it
- Charge it for a full hour first — and watch the light. Plug it into a known-good USB-C charger (a proper wall adapter, not a weak laptop port) and leave it for at least an hour. A fully drained Roam shows no light at all until it's taken on some charge — so "no response" early on is normal. A blinking orange light means it's charging from empty.
- Try a different cable and charger. A bad USB-C cable or underpowered source is a common reason it "won't charge." Swap both before assuming the speaker is dead.
- Force a restart. Once it's had some charge: press and hold the power button on the back for about 5 seconds to power it off fully, wait, then press once to turn it back on. If it's stuck, disconnect power, hold the power button ~5 seconds, then reconnect and power on.
- Check the charging contacts. On wireless/Qi charging, the Roam must seat exactly; grime on the contacts or pad blocks charging. Wipe them and use the USB-C cable directly to rule the pad out.
If it still won't power on
- Leave it charging overnight on the USB-C cable — a battery that sat empty for a long time can take far longer than an hour to wake.
- Factory reset once it powers on but misbehaves: power off, then hold the power button while reconnecting power until the light flashes orange/white (this resets, then you re-add it in the app). If it powers on but flashes red instead, that's a setup state, not a battery fault.
- A Roam that takes zero charge on a known-good charger and cable, with no light ever, likely has a failed battery — common after a few years of charge cycles. Sonos support can confirm; otherwise it's replacement time.
FAQ
My Sonos Roam shows no light and won't turn on. That's a fully drained battery. Plug it into a real USB-C wall charger and wait at least an hour — there's no light until it's taken some charge.
It won't charge at all. Swap the USB-C cable and charger first (a weak source is the usual cause), and clean the charging contacts. Try the cable directly instead of a wireless pad.
How do I force-restart a Roam? Hold the power button on the back for about 5 seconds to power it off, then press once to turn it on. If stuck, disconnect power, hold power ~5 seconds, reconnect.
Is the battery dead for good? If it takes no charge on a known-good charger and cable with no light ever, the battery has likely failed — common after years of use. Contact Sonos or replace it; our Sonos speaker guide covers the current Roam and its alternatives.
