A Sonos Sub that won't connect — or sits there making no bass — is almost always a pairing/bonding problem. The Sub isn't a standalone speaker: it must be bonded to a specific room (a soundbar like Beam/Arc/Ray, or a stereo pair), and if that bond is missing or dropped, you get silence or no low end. Here's how to fix it.
Fix it
- Bond the Sub to a room — the key step. In the Sonos app: Settings > System > pick the room with your soundbar/speaker > Add Sub (or Room Settings > Add Surrounds/Sub). A Sub added to the system but not bonded to a room produces no bass. This is the #1 cause.
- Power-cycle the Sub. Unplug it for at least 30 seconds, then back on — clears a dropped connection. Give it a minute to rejoin.
- Check Wi-Fi/SonosNet. The Sub connects wirelessly to the bonded speaker. If it keeps dropping, move it closer to the bonded unit, reduce interference, or — if any Sonos product is wired to the router (creating SonosNet) — that stabilizes the whole system. The same network steps that fix a Sonos speaker that won't connect to the TV apply to a Sub that won't bond.
- Update the Sonos system. System > System Updates — an out-of-date Sub drops off and won't bond cleanly. If the app itself is misbehaving and can't even reach the system, see where the Sonos app stands now.
- Confirm Sub audio is on and tuned. Room Settings > Sub > make sure it's enabled and the Sub level isn't turned all the way down (which reads as "no bass").
If it bonds but drops out
That's a wireless link issue between the Sub and its bonded speaker:
- Move it closer to the soundbar/speaker it's bonded to, away from the router and other 2.4GHz sources.
- Wire one Sonos product to the router to switch the system onto SonosNet (Sonos's own mesh), which is more robust for bonded Subs than busy home Wi-Fi.
- Re-bond it: remove the Sub from the room and add it again to refresh the link.
Factory reset (last resort)
If it won't bond at all: unplug the Sub, hold the join/connect button while reconnecting power until the light flashes orange then white, then add it fresh in the app.
FAQ
My Sonos Sub makes no bass. It's probably not bonded to a room. In the app, open the room with your soundbar and add the Sub — a Sub that isn't bonded plays no bass.
The Sub won't connect at all. Power-cycle it (unplug 30+ seconds), then add it to the room in Settings > System. If it still won't bond, factory reset and re-add it.
It bonds then drops out. A weak wireless link to the bonded speaker. Move it closer, reduce 2.4GHz interference, or wire a Sonos product to the router to use SonosNet.
Can the Sub work on its own? No — it must be bonded to a Sonos soundbar or speaker. It doesn't play independently.
