A PS5 download that stalls, throws an error (CE-/NW-/WS-), or sits "queued" forever is almost always a network issue, a corrupted download, or a Rest Mode hiccup — not a failing console. Work these in order and most downloads complete.
Fix it
- Pause and resume the download. Open the Downloads/Notifications tile, pause the stuck item, wait, then resume. This restarts a stalled transfer and clears a lot of one-off errors.
- Check the connection. Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. A weak or dropping link is the top cause. The PS5's Wi-Fi is poor behind a cabinet — wire it with Ethernet, move it closer, or add an extender.
- Pause other downloads. A second install splits the bandwidth and can stall both. Let one finish at a time.
- Download in Rest Mode (correctly). Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet = On. Without this, Rest Mode kills the download. Many "stopped overnight" cases are this setting.
- Clear a corrupted download. If one game errors repeatedly: delete the game/update and re-download it. A half-corrupted file won't repair itself.
If it errors with a code
- NW-/WS-: network or PSN-server side. Test the connection, set DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (the PS5 Wi-Fi NW-102307-3 DNS fix walks the exact menu), and check the PSN status page for an outage.
- CE-: console/storage. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode (hold power for the second beep > Rebuild Database) — clears a clogged download state without deleting games.
- Not enough storage: a large game needs free space for the download and its extraction — free up roughly double the game size.
If downloads are just slow (not erroring)
That's bandwidth. Wire it with Ethernet, download in Rest Mode, and change DNS — see the dedicated steps for why your PS5 is downloading so slow. Slow ≠ broken; it's almost always the connection.
FAQ
My PS5 download is stuck at the same percentage. Pause and resume it, then check your connection. A weak link stalls transfers — wire it or move closer to the router.
It stops downloading in Rest Mode. Enable "Stay Connected to the Internet" under Rest Mode power settings — otherwise Rest Mode cuts the download.
One game keeps erroring while others download fine. That file is corrupted. Delete the game/update and re-download it.
I get an NW or WS error. That's network or PSN's servers. Test the connection, set DNS to 8.8.8.8, and check the PSN status page.
