"Roku not connected" is really two different problems, and telling them apart saves you time: it can't join your Wi-Fi at all, or it joined but can't reach the internet. Check Settings > Network > About — if it shows connected to your network but "not connected to internet," it's the second kind. Each has its own fix.
If it can't join Wi-Fi
- Re-enter the password carefully. Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless, pick your network, and retype the password (case-sensitive). A wrong character is the most common cause, and the usual trigger behind Roku error 014.
- Use the 2.4 GHz network. Many Rokus connect more reliably to 2.4 GHz, which reaches farther. If your router broadcasts separate bands, try the 2.4 GHz SSID. (The Streaming Stick 4K is Wi-Fi only — no Ethernet — so signal matters.)
- Reboot both. Unplug the Roku for at least 30 seconds and power-cycle the router. A stale state blocks a lot of connections.
- Move it closer / power from the wall. Weak signal — or an underpowered stick on a TV USB port — causes dropouts. Move the Roku nearer the router (or add an extender), and use the wall power adapter.
If it's connected but has no internet
The Roku reached your router but can't get out to the internet:
- Confirm other devices have internet on the same Wi-Fi. If they don't either, it's your internet/router, not the Roku.
- Reboot the modem and router (off ~30 seconds), and let them fully reconnect.
- Set the router's DNS to a public resolver (
8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4, or1.1.1.1). A failing ISP DNS lets the Roku join Wi-Fi but blocks the internet — a classic "connected, no internet" cause. - Check for MAC filtering or a full device list on the router that might be blocking the Roku.
If it keeps dropping
A Roku that connects then drops is almost always weak signal or 2.4 GHz congestion. Move it closer, switch bands, reduce interference (microwaves, other 2.4 GHz gear), or add a Wi-Fi extender near the TV.
FAQ
Roku says connected but nothing loads — why? It joined Wi-Fi but can't reach the internet. Check other devices, reboot the router, and set the router's DNS to 8.8.8.8.
It won't accept my Wi-Fi password. Retype it carefully (it's case-sensitive), and try the 2.4 GHz network, which Rokus often join more reliably.
It connects then drops. Weak signal or 2.4 GHz congestion. Move the Roku closer, power it from the wall adapter, and consider an extender.
Does the Roku stick have Ethernet? The Streaming Stick 4K is Wi-Fi only. Only Ultra models have an Ethernet port — so for the sticks, signal strength is what matters.
