Disney+ audio problems on Apple TV come in two flavors: stuck in stereo / no Atmos (a passthrough or track problem) and audio dropping out (a handshake problem). They have different fixes, so first notice which you've got — does it never get surround, or does it cut out during playback?

If it's stereo-only / no Atmos or 5.1

  1. Check the title's audio track. In the Disney+ player, open the audio/subtitles menu and make sure you've selected the 5.1 or Atmos track (often listed as "English [Dolby Atmos]" or "5.1"), not a plain stereo or descriptive-audio track. Some titles only have stereo — confirm the show actually offers surround.
  2. Set the chain up for Atmos. Atmos needs the TV's audio passing through to your soundbar/receiver: use the eARC port with a certified Ultra High Speed cable, enable eARC, and set the TV's digital audio output to Pass-Through / Bitstream, not PCM.
  3. Let the Apple TV negotiate per title. Settings > Video and Audio — keep audio on automatic so it outputs the format each show actually has, rather than forcing one.
  4. Confirm on the receiver's display. It should read "Dolby Atmos" or "Dolby Digital+" on an Atmos title — if it shows PCM, the passthrough setting in step 2 is your fix.

If the audio drops out

Audio that cuts in and out on Disney+ is usually the eARC handshake re-syncing when the format changes:

  1. Reseat and swap the cable for a short certified Ultra High Speed one on the eARC port — a marginal cable is the top cause of dropouts.
  2. Power-cycle the chain in order. Unplug the Apple TV, TV, and soundbar for at least 30 seconds; power the TV first, then the soundbar, then the Apple TV.
  3. Update everything — Apple TV, TV, and soundbar firmware often include eARC handshake fixes.
  4. Turn off "Reduce Loud Sounds" (Settings > Video and Audio), which processes audio in a way that can cause drops on some setups.

If Atmos is missing entirely rather than just dropping, work through the Netflix-on-Apple-TV Atmos fix too — the plan-tier and ARC-vs-eARC checks there apply to Disney+ as well.

FAQ

Why is Disney+ only in stereo on my Apple TV? Usually the wrong audio track is selected in the Disney+ player, or the TV's passthrough is set to PCM. Pick the 5.1/Atmos track and set digital audio out to Pass-Through.

Disney+ audio keeps cutting out. That's an eARC handshake re-syncing. Swap to a certified Ultra High Speed cable on the eARC port and update all three devices.

Atmos works on Netflix but not Disney+. Check the specific Disney+ title actually has an Atmos track, and that you've selected it in the player's audio menu — not every title offers it.

My soundbar shows PCM, not Dolby. The TV is decoding instead of passing the bitstream. Set the TV's digital audio output to Pass-Through/Bitstream.
