TCL makes solid TVs at every price point, but eARC compatibility with soundbars can be hit or miss — especially on Roku TV models where CEC behavior is different from standard Android or Google TV. Here is what to look for, how to avoid the common problems, and which soundbars pair reliably with TCL sets.

Quick answer

What to look for

eARC support (not just ARC) Standard ARC is limited to compressed Dolby Digital. eARC carries Dolby Atmos and TrueHD without downmixing. Most TCL TVs from 2020 onwards support eARC on at least one HDMI port.

CEC compatibility TCL Roku TVs use a slightly different CEC implementation than other platforms. Some soundbars from smaller brands fail to negotiate volume control or power sync correctly with Roku TV. Stick to major brands with good CEC track records — Sonos, Bose, Samsung, and TCL's own soundbars all handle this reliably.

Dolby Atmos decoding Look for upward-firing drivers or a height channel. A soundbar labelled "Dolby Atmos" without height speakers will decode Atmos but virtualize the overhead effects rather than reproducing them physically. Both approaches work, but physical height drivers sound noticeably better.

Subwoofer included or optional TCL TVs range from 43-inch bedroom sets to 85-inch living room screens. A soundbar with an included wireless subwoofer is strongly recommended for anything above 55 inches — the difference in bass is significant.

Our picks

TCL Alto 9+ — best if you want seamless Roku integration Designed specifically for TCL Roku TVs. The soundbar pairs to the TV remote automatically, no extra remote needed. Supports eARC, Dolby Atmos (with height virtualization), and AirPlay 2. The most plug-and-play option for TCL setups. TCL Alto 9+ on Amazon (paid link)

Sonos Arc — best overall soundbar for TCL TVs The most consistent eARC soundbar available at any price. Handles TCL's CEC implementation cleanly, maintains Atmos even after standby, and sounds excellent. Physical upward-firing drivers (not virtualized). Sonos Wireless Audio Sync via the app takes care of any lip sync drift automatically. Sonos Arc on Amazon (paid link)

Bose Smart Soundbar 600 — best compact option Smaller footprint than the Sonos Arc but very capable. Dolby Atmos support with height virtualization, eARC with stable CEC behavior on TCL Roku TVs, and AirPlay 2 / Bluetooth for flexible audio streaming. Good choice for smaller rooms. Samsung HW-Q800D — best value with wireless subwoofer included A 5.1.2ch system with an included wireless subwoofer and rear satellite speakers at a price below standalone soundbars from Sonos. eARC and Dolby Atmos with physical height drivers. Works reliably with TCL over standard HDMI-CEC. Samsung HW-Q800D on Amazon (paid link)

How to set up eARC on a TCL TV

  1. Connect the soundbar to the eARC port Check the back of your TCL TV for the HDMI port labeled "ARC" or "eARC" — typically HDMI 1 or 2. Use a certified HDMI 2.1 cable.

  2. Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV Roku TV: Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC) → Enable all options. Google TV: Settings → Display & Sound → HDMI → Enable HDMI-CEC.

  3. Set audio output to ARC/eARC Roku TV: Settings → Audio → Audio output → HDMI ARC. Google TV: Settings → Display & Sound → Audio output → HDMI ARC/eARC.

  4. Power cycle both devices Unplug both TV and soundbar for 30 seconds, reconnect the HDMI cable, then power on the TV first and wait for it to fully boot before turning on the soundbar.

  5. Test with Dolby Atmos content Play an Atmos title on Netflix or Disney+. The soundbar display should show "Dolby Atmos." If it shows "PCM" or nothing, check that the TV audio output is set to "Auto" or "Pass-through" rather than "PCM only."

Troubleshooting

Soundbar not responding to TV volume — On Roku TV, go to Settings → System → Control other devices → 1-Touch Play and System Audio Control. Enable both. If the soundbar still doesn't respond, power cycle both devices with HDMI cable disconnected.

Audio drops or cuts out randomly — Replace the HDMI cable with a certified Ultra High Speed (48Gbps) model. Bundled cables are frequently the cause of eARC dropouts, especially with Atmos content. See our full guide: TCL TV eARC/ARC not working with soundbar.

No Dolby Atmos on Roku apps — Roku TV requires the app to support Atmos natively. Netflix and Disney+ on Roku support Atmos. Some apps do not. Also check Settings → Audio → Audio mode → Dolby Atmos.

FAQ

Do I need a TCL soundbar with my TCL TV? No, but TCL's own Alto soundbars offer the most seamless Roku integration. Any eARC soundbar from a major brand will work — the TCL-specific advantage is just the automatic remote pairing.

Will my soundbar work on all HDMI ports on a TCL TV? No. eARC is available on only one port. Check the back of your TV — it will be labeled. Standard ARC (on a different port) will downgrade audio quality.

Can I use optical instead of HDMI ARC? Optical works as a fallback but limits you to compressed Dolby Digital 5.1 — no Atmos, no TrueHD. Use eARC if your soundbar supports it.

Does the soundbar need to be the same brand as the TV? No. Sonos, Bose, and Samsung soundbars all work well with TCL TVs via standard eARC and HDMI-CEC. Brand matching only matters for proprietary features.
