"There was a problem playing this content" means a stream got to the point of starting and failed — almost always a network hiccup, a stale app session, or an HDCP (copy-protection) handshake, not a broken Apple TV. The quickest way through is to notice where it fails: one app, or everything? On every app, it's the Apple TV/network; on one app, it's that app.

Quick fixes (most cases)

  1. Restart the app, then the Apple TV. Swipe the app closed (double-press TV/Home, swipe up), reopen, and retry. If it persists, restart the box: Settings > System > Restart, or unplug it for at least 30 seconds.
  2. Check the network. Settings > Network — confirm it's connected and has decent speed (~25 Mbps for 4K). Go wired (the Apple TV 4K has Ethernet) or move it nearer the router if Wi-Fi is weak. If you're seeing timeout codes like −3905 or 1021, the Apple TV network timeout fixes cover those specifically.
  3. Sign out and back into the affected app if it's just one — that clears a stale login/DRM token, the usual single-app cause.

If it's an HDCP / copy-protection error

A content error that specifically mentions HDCP, or shows on protected video (and your menus look fine), is a handshake problem:

  1. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, and try a certified Ultra High Speed cable.
  2. Go straight to the TV. Route the Apple TV directly into the TV, bypassing any receiver, soundbar, or HDMI splitter — these are frequent HDCP-handshake breakers. If you land on a black screen instead of an error, see the Apple TV HDMI black-screen fixes.
  3. Use a 4K/HDCP 2.2 port on the TV, and reset the link by power-cycling the Apple TV.

If it happens across every app

Then it's the box or the account:

  1. Update tvOS. Settings > System > Software Updates.
  2. Check date and time. Settings > General > Date and Time > Set Automatically — a wrong clock breaks the secure connection and reads as a playback error.
  3. Sign out of your Apple Account (Settings > Users and Accounts) and back in to refresh authorization.

FAQ

Does this mean my Apple TV is broken? Almost never. It means a stream failed to start — usually network, a stale app session, or an HDCP handshake.

It only happens on one app. That app's login/DRM token is stale. Sign out and back into that app, and make sure it's updated.

It mentions HDCP or only fails on protected video. That's a handshake issue. Reseat/swap the HDMI cable, connect the Apple TV straight to the TV (no receiver), and use a 4K/HDCP 2.2 port.

Everything fails to play. Update tvOS, check the date/time is automatic (a wrong clock looks like a playback error), and sign out/in of your Apple Account.
