Color banding — visible steps in skies, shadows, and gradients in HDR — on an Apple TV 4K is almost always a bandwidth or color-format issue, not the content. The usual causes: a forced output format pushing reduced chroma, the TV port not running full color, or a marginal cable that can't carry the data for smooth gradients. Fix those and the banding disappears.

Fix it

  1. Stop forcing a fixed format — let Apple TV match content. Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content > Match Dynamic Range = On and Match Frame Rate = On. Forcing everything into one format (e.g. always 4K Dolby Vision) makes the TV tone-map content it shouldn't, which shows as banding. Matching keeps each title in its native, correctly-graded format — the Match Frame Rate and Dolby Vision settings guide walks through these toggles.
  2. Set the format to 4K SDR or 4K Dolby Vision (not "4K60 HDR" forced). Video and Audio > Format. If banding is bad in HDR10, try 4K SDR with Match Content on — the Apple TV then switches to HDR only for true HDR titles.
  3. Turn on the TV port's full color / Deep Color. Samsung Input Signal Plus, LG HDMI Deep Color, Sony Enhanced format, TCL/Hisense HDMI Enhanced. Without it the port runs reduced chroma (4:2:0 / 8-bit), the classic banding cause.
  4. Use a certified Ultra High Speed cable. Smooth 10-bit HDR gradients need the bandwidth; a marginal cable drops to a lower color depth and bands. Keep it short.

If banding persists

FAQ

Why does Apple TV HDR have banding but SDR doesn't? HDR's wider range exposes color-depth limits. If the port runs reduced chroma or the cable can't carry 10-bit, gradients step. Enable Deep Color and use a certified cable.

Should I leave it on Dolby Vision? Only if your TV does DV well. Otherwise set 4K SDR with Match Dynamic Range on — Apple TV switches to HDR only for genuine HDR content. If HDR also looks too dark or washed out, see Apple TV HDR dark or wrong.

Is it my Apple TV or my TV? Check the same scene in the TV's own app. If it bands there too, it's the TV's panel/processing, not the Apple TV.

Does the cable cause banding? It can — a marginal cable drops color depth to fit the bandwidth, which bands. Swap to a certified Ultra High Speed cable.
